Honda CBR650R Exhaust Upgrade Guide

A Red motorcycle parked in a garage.

The Honda CBR650R is one of the most popular middleweight bikes in the world right now, and for good reason. The inline four-cylinder engine is refined, willing, and responsive. The bike handles well, sits at an accessible price point, and is genuinely enjoyable to ride on both road and track. It is also, if you ask most owners, crying out for a better exhaust note.

At Vandemon Performance, the Honda CBR650R exhaust is one of our best sellers. We have been supplying these systems for several years, and the questions we receive before purchase are nearly always the same. This guide answers all of them in one place.

If you are considering an exhaust upgrade for your CBR650R, read this before you order anything, including from us.

The Most Important Thing to Check Before You Order

The CBR650R and its naked sibling, the CB650R, share the same exhaust fitment from 2019 to 2026. The Vandemon system fits both models across this full range. Before ordering, confirm your exact model year so we can ensure you receive the correct specification.

"This model was manufactured over a number of years. The customer needs to know what they have so they order the correct exhaust." — Michael, Vandemon Performance

Why the CBR650R Is Such a Strong Exhaust Upgrade Candidate

The CBR650R's inline four-cylinder engine is manufactured in Thailand and is one of Honda's most praised middleweight units. It revs freely, delivers a linear power band, and is particularly satisfying at higher revs, which makes the stock exhaust note all the more disappointing by comparison.

Honda engineers the CBR650R with an emissions-compliant exhaust system that prioritises regulatory compliance over performance and sound. The result is a muffler that is heavy, restrictive, and acoustically flat. The OEM system weighs 10.8kg. This is not a criticism of the bike; it is simply the reality of modern emissions regulations applied to a road-going motorcycle.

What distinguishes a quality upgrade from a generic one comes down to materials, build specification, and whether the system has been designed around this bike's specific exhaust characteristics or simply adapted from a universal template.

The Vandemon CBR650R Exhaust System

Design Philosophy: Short and Low

The Vandemon system for the CBR650R is what we refer to internally as a short exhaust, a compact, low-mount configuration that tucks the muffler close to the underside of the bike. This is a deliberate design choice, not a compromise.

CBR650R owners consistently prefer the low-mount aesthetic. The short system keeps the visual profile clean, the muffler tight to the machine, and the overall appearance close to what you would expect from factory race preparation. It is the most popular configuration in this class for a reason.

"It's what we call a short exhaust, extremely popular, because people love the very low-mount nature of the muffler. It's designed predominantly around appearance and sound, and it delivers both." — Michael, Vandemon Performance

Materials and Specifications

The CBR650R system is constructed from Grade 1 commercially pure titanium (Ti-1) sourced from Japanese suppliers and used for both the headers and the muffler. Unlike many systems that advertise titanium but use stainless steel headers, this is genuinely full titanium from the headers to the muffler. Wall thickness is 1.2mm throughout.

Some manufacturers use 0.9mm titanium to shave additional weight, but this comes at the cost of long-term durability. Thinner wall stock is more susceptible to fatigue cracking over time. At 1.2mm, the tensile strength approaches that of stainless steel while still delivering meaningful weight savings. The complete Vandemon system weighs 4.5kg against the OEM system's 10.8kg, a saving of 6.3kg.

The system includes two M12x1.25 O2 sensor ports, a removable baffle, and precision CNC-machined slip joints for secure, gas-tight connections.

Performance figures - a gain of 5.0hp without tuning, with up to 20% additional gains achievable after a quality tune. Stationary noise is 98dB with the baffle fitted at 5,500rpm, and 103dB without the baffle.

Full System for the CBR650R

The Vandemon system for the CBR650R is a full exhaust replacing the factory headers, catalytic converter, and muffler. By removing the factory restrictor and catalytic converter, the engine is free to breathe properly, which is where most of the performance gain comes from.

A tune is not required for safe operation on a Japanese-manufactured bike like this, but it is strongly recommended to unlock the full 20% performance improvement the system can deliver.

Installation: What to Know Before You Fit It

Have It Installed by a Professional

We recommend having your Vandemon exhaust installed by a qualified motorcycle mechanic. This is not a disclaimer for its own sake; it is practical advice based on what we see go wrong when owners install their own exhausts.

The most common self-installation issue on this model and others is over-tightening the exhaust flange nuts at the header connection. The torque settings for these fasteners are lower than most people expect. An experienced mechanic knows this. An owner unfamiliar with exhaust fitment will frequently over-tighten, which can warp or crack the exhaust flange, an expensive component that cannot be repaired and must be replaced.

A professional installation also ensures that the system is correctly seated at every joint, that no exhaust gas leaks develop over time, and that the oxygen sensor connections are properly fitted.

ECU Fault Codes After Installation

If you are fitting the full exhaust system to your CBR650R, the catalytic converter and oxygen sensors are removed during installation. The CBR650R's ECU monitors these components and will trigger fault codes if it detects that they are missing or inactive. You will see a warning light on your dashboard.

This is resolved with oxygen sensor delete plugs, which signal the ECU as if the sensors are still present. Vandemon stocks Smart Moto oxygen sensor delete devices for compatible models. Check the accessories section of the website for availability for your specific model year.

Caring for Your Titanium Exhaust: The Step Most Buyers Miss

This is the single most common post-purchase support issue we deal with, and it is entirely avoidable. Titanium must be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol before the first heat cycle.

When titanium is exposed to heat during the bluing process, any fingerprints on the surface will be permanently fixed in the colouration. Once this happens, they cannot be removed. The result is a visible fingerprint pattern preserved in the pipe's heat colouration.

Before running the engine for the first time after fitting your Vandemon titanium exhaust, wipe down every section of exposed titanium pipe thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol. Remove all fingerprints. This step cannot be undone after the first heat cycle.

Ongoing Maintenance

Titanium requires very little ongoing maintenance. For regular cleaning, a soft cloth is sufficient to remove road grime. A light application of household furniture polish, Mr Sheen in Australia or Pledge in the US, will help maintain the finish and protect the surface between cleanings.

Do not use metal polish on titanium. Metal polish is formulated for stainless steel and chrome. When applied to titanium, it will remove heat-induced colouration and permanently dull polished finishes. The colouration that develops on titanium under heat is what most owners are after, and metal polish will strip it.

Noise, Legality, and the Baffle

The Vandemon CBR650R exhaust is designed and sold as a competition exhaust system intended for off-road and track use. It is not compliant with Euro 4, Euro 5, or Euro 5+ emissions standards for pollution-controlled vehicles operated on public roads, and is not approved by the California Air Resources Board. Noise regulations vary significantly by country and Australian state. Buyers in all markets should confirm local requirements before purchasing.

The system is supplied with a removable baffle fitted as standard. With the baffle fitted, the stationary noise level is 98dB at 5,500rpm. Without the baffle, it is 103dB. The baffle will not, in most cases, bring the system into compliance with road-legal noise limits. Its purpose is to moderate sound in track-day noise restrictions and noise-sensitive situations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the CBR650R exhaust fit both the CB650R and CBR650R?

Yes. The Vandemon LM system is compatible with both the CB650R and the CBR650R across the 2019 to 2026 model years.

Will the Vandemon exhaust fit my CBR650R without modification?

Yes. The system is designed as a direct replacement. No modification to the bike is required. A qualified mechanic should be able to complete the installation without any additional fabrication or adaptation work.

Does the CBR650R exhaust come with a warranty?

Yes. Vandemon exhausts carry a two-year warranty against manufacturing defects. The warranty covers material and workmanship faults under normal use conditions. We recommend professional installation to protect the warranty, as damage resulting from incorrect fitting or over-tightening of fasteners is not covered under warranty.

Will a titanium exhaust discolour over time?

Yes, and this is expected and desirable. The blue, gold, and purple heat colouration that develops along the pipe after the first few heat cycles is a characteristic property of titanium. It is not a defect. The pattern is unique to each pipe and develops with use. To preserve the finish, clean with isopropyl alcohol before the first heat cycle to remove all fingerprints.

Do I need to remap my CBR650R after fitting the exhaust?

A remap is not mandatory on this Japanese-manufactured bike. The engine will run safely without one and produce approximately 5hp over stock. However, a quality tune is strongly recommended to unlock the full 20% performance improvement the system can deliver.

Is the CBR650R exhaust legal on the road in Australia?

The Vandemon CBR650R exhaust is a competition exhaust system designed for off-road and track use. Using it on public roads is at the rider's discretion and responsibility. Noise regulations vary by state. The baffle is supplied as standard and reduces the exhaust note, but will not guarantee compliance with state-specific road noise requirements. Riders in noise-regulated states should confirm local requirements before using the road.
